


Training and Certifications
Arc of the Caribbean is a comprehensive sail training program designed to train participants to be confident and competent sailors. Broadreachers learn how to responsibly operate sailing yachts and become skilled in small boat handling. No previous sailing experience is required. On the Arc of the Caribbean program there are opportunities to earn the following certifications.
These courses teach participants important sailing basics including points of sail, knots and splices, reefing, tacking, jibing, yacht nomenclature, coastal and ocean navigation, docking, anchoring, helmsmanship, man overboard drills and GPS navigation.
This course gives a basic understanding of the knowledge and skills required to be an active crew member onboard a sailing yacht. Subjects include: points of sail, knots and splices, reefing, tacking, jibing, yacht nomenclature, coastal and ocean navigation, safety checks, docking, anchoring, helmsmanship, small boat handling, man overboard drills and GPS navigation.
Every crew member needs to know how to operate a marine radio. This course covers the rules for use and operation of VHF radios, what to do in case of an emergency and an introduction to other marine communications equipment.
This course is a more advanced certificate, designed to increase nautical knowledge, theory and seamanship skills sufficiently to prepare students to be flotilla skipper or watch keeper aboard a yacht in near coastal environments. Topics of study include: yacht systems and engine operation, hull and rig checks, heavy weather sailing, rules of the road, passage planning and advanced seamanship.
